Meguiar's Metal Polish — high-shine polish for chrome, aluminium, stainless steel and every metal

What does Meguiar's Metal Polish do? Meguiar's universal metal polish cleans, polishes and protects every kind of metal — chrome, aluminium, stainless steel, brass, copper and more. It pulls off oxidation, water spots and heat tarnish and leaves a brilliant high-shine finish with a light protective effect. 6 oz (177 ml).

Metals on a car take constant punishment: chrome bumpers and trim go dull and blotchy from moisture and acid-rain residue, aluminium wheels oxidise under brake dust and road grime, polished stainless steel loses its shine to limescale spots and fingerprints. Conventional cleaners lift surface dirt but not the oxidation and the deeper heat tarnish that leave metal permanently matt and tired-looking. The Meguiar's Metal Polish is the professional answer to that: a universal metal-polish formula that dissolves oxidation, tarnish and water spots both chemically and abrasively, brings the metal surface to a high shine and seals it with a light protective layer — for chrome, aluminium, stainless steel and just about any other metal surface on the car or around the house.

  • Universal metal polish for chrome, aluminium, stainless steel and more — one product for every metal surface. Instead of needing several specialised care products for different metals, Meguiar's Metal Polish covers all the usual metal surfaces on a car: chrome trim, aluminium wheels, stainless-steel exhaust systems, brass fittings and polished steel. The universal formula is tuned to deliver the best polishing and cleaning results on all of them without harming the metal.
  • Removes oxidation, tarnish and water spots — chemically and abrasively. The polish pairs fine abrasive particles with chemical actives that break down oxidation layers and heat tarnish. Stubborn limescale spots are loosened by the chemical side, oxidation layers are cut away by the fine abrasives. The result: a bright, clear metal surface with no deposits, oxidation or discolouration.
  • Leaves a brilliant high shine with a protective effect — gloss and protection in one step. After polishing, Meguiar's Metal Polish leaves a light protective layer on the metal that gives short-term protection against fresh oxidation and water spots. The gloss shows straight away: the metal comes up in a deep, mirror-like shine that gives chrome and polished aluminium back their original, fresh look.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: Lay Meguiar's Metal Polish onto a clean, dry metal surface with a soft applicator pad or a microfibre cloth. For chrome and smooth metal: circular motions with light pressure until the polish works in clear. On heavily oxidised or tarnished spots, go over it a few times until the shine comes up. Then buff the residue off with a clean microfibre cloth. For aluminium wheels: always pull brake dust and road grime off with a wheel cleaner before the Metal Polish — grit trapped in the polish will drag extra scratches across the alloy.

Which metals on the car benefit from Meguiar's Metal Polish — the main jobs at a glance

Chrome is the classic job for metal polish on a car. Chrome trim, chrome bumpers (on classics and youngtimers), chrome door handles and chrome window surrounds lose their signature mirror shine to moisture, salt and UV. Limescale spots, rust flecks and dull oxidation layers bury the original gloss. Meguiar's Metal Polish strips those layers off and brings the chrome mirror shine back. A well-kept chrome bumper or a flawless strip of chrome trim is the visual highlight of any classic — and with the right metal polish and regular care it stays that way for good.

Aluminium is everywhere on a modern car: alloy wheels, motorsport parts, bolt-on bits and polished aluminium trim inside the cabin. Aluminium oxidises fast in the air and forms a matt, grey-white oxidation layer that hides the metallic shine completely. On polished aluminium, brake dust also leaves stubborn spots that are hard to shift without a polish. Meguiar's Metal Polish dissolves the oxidation and the brake dust and gets the clean aluminium shining again. On badly oxidised aluminium we'd suggest an aluminium de-oxidiser or a fine Scotch-Brite pass before the Metal Polish, to knock back the worst of the oxidation mechanically — it saves polish and time and gives you a more even result.

Stainless steel on a car mostly shows up on exhaust tips and sports exhaust systems. Heat, exhaust residue and moisture leave tarnish (bluish-gold discolouration from heat oxidation) and water spots on stainless. Meguiar's Metal Polish takes that tarnish off and brings polished stainless back to a high shine — for an exhaust that looks as good as it performs. On sports and stainless exhausts from quality makers especially, regular polishing is real value protection: a cared-for system is visibly worth more at resale than a neglected, spotted, tarnished one.

In the engine bay you'll often find brass and copper parts (line connectors, fittings, valves) that tarnish and oxidise from heat and moisture. Meguiar's Metal Polish does a good job here too — as long as the parts are accessible and cold. Inside the cabin, polished aluminium trim, stainless inlays around the gear knob and chrome interior touches can all be freshened up with the Metal Polish.

For motorsport and tuning fans the Metal Polish is at home on engine parts too: polished aluminium rocker covers, air-filter housings, stainless exhaust manifolds and polished callipers are among the favourite jobs. After a proper polish with Meguiar's Metal Polish you get an engine bay that impresses on looks as much as on spec — the kind of detail that keeps pulling eyes at shows and meets.

Meguiar's Metal Polish vs other metal polishes — what sets the Meguiar's formula apart

Next to plain household metal cleaners (Sidol, Autosol and the like), Meguiar's Metal Polish is tuned far finer: the abrasives are sized to take off oxidation and tarnish effectively without working deep scratches into the metal. Coarse household polishes can leave visible scratches on soft metals like chrome and polished aluminium that dull the shine for good.

The Meguiar's formula also carries chemical actives that go after oxidation compounds directly — not just sand them off. That mix of chemical oxidation-dissolving and finely tuned abrasives is the key to a streak-free, deep high shine after polishing. Plain polishes with no chemical side hit their limit on heavy oxidation.

Compared with pure cleaners, the Metal Polish is also a full three-in-one process: cleaning (lifting dirt and spots), polishing (breaking down oxidation, building gloss) and protection (laying down a light seal). That saves time and effort against three-stage systems with separate cleaner, polish and sealant products. For the occasional home user who tends to their chrome trim once or twice a year, this all-in-one is ideal — for pros with heavy polishing volume, a three-stage job with dedicated single products can make sense to push the results even further.

For high-shine aluminium like polished alloys or motorsport alu, we'd add a seal with an aluminium-specific protective product after polishing with the Metal Polish, since the Metal Polish's built-in protective layer only lasts short-term on hard-worked surfaces. The Metal Polish itself lays down the high-shine base for a long-life seal to key into perfectly. Polished alloys that get a wheel sealant after the Metal Polish are much easier to clean, since brake dust and dirt cling less to the smooth, sealed surface — and the high shine you worked so hard for lasts a lot longer.

Metal care through the year — seasonal tips for car chrome and metal parts

Metals on a car run through seasonal stress cycles that call for a care plan to match. In spring, after the winter months of road salt and cold, chrome and polished aluminium usually show the worst oxidation and spotting of the year. Road-salt residue that has settled into gaps and onto metal surfaces starts to attack the chrome layer and alloy surfaces chemically if it isn't cleared off in time. A thorough spring treatment with Meguiar's Metal Polish clears those winter deposits completely and sets the metal up well for the UV-heavy summer.

In summer, regular top-ups pay off: water spots and limescale build up when water dries fast on hot metal. A monthly refresh with the Metal Polish, or at least a regular wipe-down with a suitable metal care product, keeps the high shine up without much effort.

In autumn, before the salt season, we'd suggest a thorough polish followed by a seal: a fresh protective layer on chrome and polished metal is the best prep for winter's corrosive conditions. Road salt sitting in damp gaps and seams attacks unprotected chrome and aluminium far faster than sealed surfaces. Rust on chrome parts usually doesn't start on the chrome layer itself but underneath it — when moisture works through tiny cracks or pores in the chrome plating and the metal below oxidises. An intact protective layer slows that right down. The Metal Polish's light protective effect isn't enough on its own for winter — an extra metal sealant or wax layer to finish is worth it.

For classics and youngtimers with big chrome areas we'd suggest a routine that pairs the Metal Polish with a chrome dressing afterwards: Metal Polish first to strip oxidation and build the high shine, then a chrome care product as a final, long-lasting protective layer. That combo keeps the signature chrome mirror shine on vintage cars going through every season.

Step by step: bringing oxidised chrome and metal back with Meguiar's Metal Polish

A good metal polish always starts with a thorough clean of the surface. Dirt, grease and road grime have to be fully off before the polish goes on — grit trapped in the polish acts like sandpaper and puts scratches in. For chrome trim: pre-wash with a mild cleaner and water, then dry. For aluminium wheels: pre-treat with a wheel cleaner and wheel brush.

Put a small amount of Metal Polish on an applicator pad or a folded microfibre cloth — less is more. Spread the polish evenly across the metal and work it in with circular motions. The white haze of the polish turns clear as the abrasives do their work — that's the sign the polish has done its job and you're finished. Don't lean on the pad or cloth: the weight of the applicator is enough; extra pressure won't give a better result, but it does raise the risk of applicator scratches on soft metal.

Then buff off with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and bring out the high shine. On heavily oxidised spots a second pass may be needed. The result shows the moment all the residue is buffed off: a clear, mirror-like metal surface with no oxidation, water spots or tarnish. If you're not fully happy with the shine, run a third pass with fresh polish — every pass pulls off more oxidation residue and step by step sharpens the reflection.

For stainless exhaust tips with heat tarnish: put the Metal Polish on a pad and work it in circles with a bit more pressure — tarnish is more stubborn than ordinary water spots and needs more polish. After the first pass, buff off with a clean cloth and judge the progress; on heavy tarnish, plan on 2–3 passes.

One important note for polishing parts near the engine bay or on hot car parts: never use the Metal Polish on warm or hot surfaces — the polish dries on too fast, leaves white residue and then buffs off only with a fight. Always work on cold parts that have cooled in the shade. After a drive, wait at least 30 minutes for the engine and exhaust to cool before you start polishing.

The Metal Polish works inside the cabin too: polished aluminium interior trim, chrome touches on the centre console and stainless gear knobs all benefit from a polish. Inside, work with especially sparing amounts and keep the polish off leather, fabric or plastic parts — the abrasive side could damage them.

Buy Meguiar's Metal Polish — universal high shine for every metal

Meguiar's Metal Polish is €21.90 for the professional answer to every metal-care job on the car. The 6 oz (177 ml) size is ideal for the home user with moderate metal-care needs — and used sparingly it lasts for plenty of jobs on chrome trim, alloys and stainless exhausts.

Especially worth it for: classic-car owners with chrome bumpers and trim that need regular freshening; tuning and motorsport fans with polished aluminium engine parts and alloys; anyone prepping a car for a classic meet or a show; or simply anyone who wants to keep chrome touches and metal parts on the car looking sharp for good. Bike owners get plenty out of the Metal Polish too: chrome exhausts, polished engine covers and stainless components on motorcycles benefit from a polish just like car parts — the formula suits every kind of motor vehicle.

As a pairing we'd suggest the Meguiar's SUPREME Shine Microfiber Towel for the streak-free buff after polishing and a soft Meguiar's Soft Foam Applicator Pad for an even application — together they make a complete, professional metal-care kit to get the most out of the Metal Polish. This compact set covers all the tools you need for a professional metal polish and is a sensible addition to any detailing setup.

Bottom line: if you want to keep chrome, aluminium, stainless steel and other metals on the car flawless and shining for good, this Metal Polish from Meguiar's is the right call. The universal formula, the easy application and the convincing result make it the go-to in any well-stocked detailing kit.
