      What belongs in a detailing workshop? Four blocks: water and pressure for the pre-wash, lifting gear for everything under the car, kit for the tyre work, and the infrastructure that feeds all of it. This category pulls the machines together and sorts out the order that actually makes sense.


      Workshop equipment for vehicle detailing is the sum of the fixed and mobile machines you use to wash a car, lift it, and work on the wheels. That covers pressure washers for the pre-wash, jacks and scissor lifts for getting underneath, machines for the tyre change, and the supply of power, water and drainage. The gear decides less about the quality of the result than about the time it takes you to get there.

      • Your infrastructure caps the choice, not your budget. A hot-water unit pulls 400V three-phase, a scissor lift needs a concrete slab that can carry it. Measure your fuse rating, your water flow and your floor before you buy and you dodge the most expensive mistake in this category.
      • Flow rate beats peak pressure. Two machines rated at 150 bar split on water volume day-to-day: 500 versus 900 litres an hour. The litres carry the loosened dirt away; the pressure only breaks it free.
      • Lifting gear comes down to height and floor space. A trolley jack lifts one corner for a wheel change; a scissor lift opens up the whole underbody at working height. Between them sit about 1,000 mm of travel and the question of whether that floor space can stay taken up for good.

      Detailing1's tip from the shop: The questions that keep landing with us are about pressure washers that keep cutting out or dropping pressure once they're running. The cause is rarely the machine and almost always the feed. A pump meant to move 900 litres an hour only gets a fraction of that through a long half-inch garden hose, and then it starts pulling air. Before you buy, grab a bucket and a stopwatch and check how much water your tap delivers in a minute, then scale it up to the hour. If that's under what the machine asks for, a short three-quarter-inch hose or a buffer tank ahead of the pump does more than any warranty claim.


      Four blocks make up a complete workshop setup

      A full detailing setup sorts into four blocks: water and pressure, lifting gear, tyre service, and the infrastructure that feeds all three.

      The first block is the one you touch every day. A pressure washer with a foam lance, a hose that reaches all the way round the car, and a drain that takes the runoff. Every detail starts with a pre-washed surface.

      The second block lifts the car. A trolley jack with axle stands is enough for wheel changes and cleaning out the arches. A scissor lift brings the whole underbody up to working height and turns a job you'd do on your knees into one you do standing up.

      The third block is the wheel itself. Tyre changer, wheel balancer, torque wrench. This is the block with the highest barrier to entry, because compressed air, floor space and practice all have to come together before the first tyre comes off the rim cleanly.

      The fourth block is the invisible one: fuse rating, water pressure, floor loading, lighting, waste disposal. It's on nobody's wishlist and it still decides which machines are even in the running. That's why we deal with it first here, not last.

      Whether the build-out pays off depends less on your standards than on how often you work. If you look after your own car, water, light and a jack get you a long way. If you put several cars through your hands a week, every step earns itself back in the time it saves.

      What doesn't belong in this category is the stuff you hold in your hand and use up: towels, brushes, wash buckets, spray bottles. That lives under Accessories. This is about the machines that stay put when you clock off.

      Power, water and floor decide before the machine does

      Before you pick a single machine, three numbers belong on a scrap of paper: the fuse rating you've got in amps, the water flow at the tap in litres a minute, and the load your floor can take.

      A cold-water unit for home use runs off a normal 230V socket on a 16A fuse. The moment a heater or a stronger pump comes into it, you're into 400V three-phase. Three-phase means three live conductors instead of one, so more power through the same cable cross-section. In plain terms: without that supply, half the machine class drops off your list.

      The second number is the water flow. A pump that moves 900 litres an hour wants to see 15 litres a minute at the inlet. Give it less and it pulls air, and air compresses. You'll notice it in the pressure pulsing, and the seals give up on you after a few months.

      Volume aside, quality counts too. Water hardness is measured in degrees of German hardness (°dH), and from about 14 °dH up every droplet dries into a white limescale ring. A softener or an osmosis unit takes the minerals out first. Day-to-day, that means the car can drip dry without you chasing it with a towel.

      The third number is the floor. A scissor lift spreads two tonnes and more across a handful of anchor points. Makers usually spec concrete of at least grade C25/30 and around 150 mm thick for that. Screed over an insulation layer doesn't cut it, however hard it feels underfoot.

      Then there's drainage. Wash outside on paving and you send cleaner and brake dust straight into the ground, and that's far from legal everywhere. A wash bay with a separator and a connection to the sewer is the clean answer, and it belongs in the plan, not tacked on at the end.

      Light and compressed air round off the list. For paint inspection you want cool-white lighting from about 5,000 K up, because warm light simply swallows swirls and holograms. For wheel work, a compressor that holds 8 bar all day rather than just touching it for a second.

      The pressure washer is the first thing you buy

      The pressure washer gives you the most time back per euro spent, because it takes over the pre-wash and defuses the part of the hand wash where the scratches come from.

      Two numbers sit on every spec sheet: working pressure in bar and flow rate in litres an hour. The pressure breaks the bond between dirt and paint; the water volume carries the loosened dirt off. What that means for you: 120 bar with plenty of water cleans faster than 180 bar with little.

      The difference between an occasional machine and a workhorse sits in the pump. Swash-plate with an aluminium head on one side; piston pump with a brass head and ceramic pistons on the other. The second type takes hours of running in one go, instead of forcing a break on you after twenty minutes.

      Hot water is the next step up. Water at 60 degrees breaks down grease and oil far faster than cold, because heat softens the grease film and the jet can then lift it off. For pure paintwork you rarely need it; for the engine bay, underbody and floor areas it makes a real dent in the time.

      The accessories decide the day-to-day. A foam lance with the right nozzle lays down Snow Foam that clings to the paint instead of running straight off, and that stretches the dwell time. A hose reel with a ten-metre reach saves you moving the machine on every wash.

      A word on the nozzle. The rotary nozzle pulls the jet into a spinning point and chews through caked-on ground dirt with it, but it has no business on paint, seals or film. On the car, the 25-degree fan jet at around 30 cm away stays the right call.

      Which class fits your water flow and your supply, you'll see in the overview under Pressure washers. The call there almost always comes down to mobile and compact on one side, stationary and long-legged on the other.

      Choose lifting gear by access and floor space

      Lifting gear splits into two worlds: lift one point for a wheel change, or bring the whole car up to working height. The difference is less about price than about space.

      A trolley jack rolls under the jacking point, lifts one corner and gets put away after. What matters is capacity, minimum height and lift height. On lowered cars the minimum height is the sticking point, because below 85 mm a standard jack simply won't slide under.

      A jack is for lifting, not for working under. The moment you reach under the car, axle stands go beneath it: same load rating, same height, solid ground. Hydraulics lose pressure over hours, steel doesn't. This rule costs nothing and it's the most important one in this section.

      A scissor lift works differently. Two crossed arms push a platform up, the car sits open on all sides, and you work standing at the arches, sills and underbody. For detailing that's the real win: your posture over several hours.

      They come mobile to roll away and recessed into the floor, flush with the surface. Mobile means flexible and usually takes two people to reposition. Recessed means tidy, but it calls for a cut-out in the concrete, which makes it a decision you're stuck with.

      Run it commercially and periodic inspection comes with it. Lifts get signed off yearly by a competent person, and jacks and stands belong in the same visual check. Budget that line in from the start, rather than meeting it as a surprise in year two.

      The single-point option lives under Jacks, the full-lift solution under Lifts. If you're rarely under the car, a jack and stands see you right for a long time, and you upgrade later when the floor space allows.

      Tyre service only pays off past a certain volume

      Tyre fitting is the block where owning the kit only carries itself past a certain number of wheels, and that sum is worth doing before you buy.

      Tyre service takes more than one machine. A tyre changer for taking tyres off and on, a balancer against imbalance, a compressor with headroom, and a torque wrench for the wheel bolts. Taken one by one each part looks manageable; added up, it's the most expensive block.

      For alloy wheels the mounting head is what matters. Plastic heads and roller bead-breakers keep their distance from the rim flange, the edge the tyre gets pulled over. What that means for you: without that protection you take away a nick in the rim finish after every change, and no polish brings that back.

      TPMS sensors don't make it any easier. They sit at the valve and slip under the roller during bead-breaking without much trouble. If you change tyres regularly, you want a machine with an adjustable bead-breaking position and the patience to check where the valve sits on every wheel.

      Balancing is the step most people underrate. A few grams of imbalance out at the rim throw a wobble you can feel through the wheel at 120 km/h. Stick-on weights go behind the spoke on a properly degreased surface, or they'll be lying in the wheel arch after the first warm day.

      The honest read: if you swap your own four wheels twice a year, you're better off with a set of wheels on rims and a torque wrench. Owning the fitting kit carries itself once customer wheels come into it, or you're moving individual tyres often.

      The machines and sets for it sit under Tyre changers. Factor the floor space in there, because a tyre changer needs clearance all round: you walk the wheel in a circle around the clamping table.

      The order you build in saves you money

      Buy it all in one go and you'll buy too big in two places and too small in one. The order that makes sense simply follows how often you use each thing.

      The space comes first. A dry, level spot with light, a socket, water and drainage is the base every machine later stands on. This step costs the least and gets skipped the most.

      Then the water. The pressure washer is in use longest per car and has the biggest effect on the state of the paint, because it lifts the dirt off before a wash mitt drags it across the surface.

      After that the lifting gear. Once arches, sills and underbody are on the list regularly, the kneeling turns into a time sink. Jack and stands first, the scissor lift later, when floor space and slab allow.

      Tyre kit comes last, because it has the highest bar. With lifting and tyre gear, before you look at price, look at spare-part supply and inspection duties. A machine with no seal kit still available is scrap metal at the first leak.

      Buying used works better here than with chemicals, because steel and hydraulics age slowly. Check piston rods for scoring, hoses for chafe marks, and ask for the last inspection report. A machine with an unbroken history is worth more than one with the lower price.
