When do I need a TotalRemover, and why isn't an IPA wipe enough?
Isopropanol (IPA) degreases a surface and lifts oily residue – plenty for the final check before a coating. What IPA can't do: fully strip cured carnauba wax, synthetic sealants or older coating layers. Detailing1's tip from Daniel: always work TotalRemover on cool, shaded paint and go panel by panel – don't try to do the whole car at once. After wiping off, run a final check over the area with a clean microfibre cloth and a few drops of isopropanol: the cloth has to stay clean, with no oil or wax smearing. Only then is the panel truly ready for the new coating.

Why the prep underneath decides everything

A coating is only as good as the surface under it. On a surface with wax residue, a new SiO₂ coating won't form a full bond – you end up with patches of good and bad adhesion that show up later as uneven hydrophobics and premature coating failure. Waxes and sealants carry oil components and release agents whose whole job is to stop dirt and moisture sticking – but that same property stops a new coating bonding properly too.

How to use it for the best results

Put Q²M TotalRemover onto a clean microfibre applicator or cloth and work it onto the cleaned paint. Go panel by panel, give it a 30 to 60 second dwell, then wipe off with a clean microfibre cloth. Don't wipe in circles – straight passes lower the risk of smearing residue around instead of picking it up.

After the TotalRemover step, wipe the area down with a fresh microfibre cloth and an isopropanol-water mix (about 50:50) – this final IPA wipe confirms full removal and preps the surface for the coating. The cloth should come back completely clean. If any residue still shows up, repeat the TotalRemover step.

TotalRemover before re-coating

The classic case: a car comes in for its yearly check, the old coating is worn and due for renewal. After wash and decon comes TotalRemover, to strip the last of the old coating completely. Then polish if needed, then fresh coating. This workflow makes sure the new coating goes onto a truly clean, chemically neutral surface.

Difference from an IPA wipe

IPA (isopropanol) degreases and lifts loose, oily residue. What IPA can't do: fully dissolve cured waxes and sealant polymers. Those compounds are chemically stable against isopropanol.
