What is the FLEX SF 150-P Swirl Finder? The FLEX SF 150-P is a professional inspection light built specifically for paint checking — a spot light with a focused beam that reveals swirl marks, holograms, scratches and fine paint defects before and after polishing.
The best polish in the world does you no good if you can't see it. The FLEX SF 150-P Swirl Finder is the tool that separates a decent polish from a professional one: an inspection light that reveals swirl marks, holograms and fine scratches on the paint that would stay invisible under normal light. Polish without a swirl finder and you're polishing blind.
The FLEX SF 150-P isn't just another torch — it's a dedicated inspection tool for paint work that reveals the surface structure of the clear coat with a tight, focused beam hitting at a specific angle. Swirls and holograms are fine scratches in the clear coat that show up as bright patterns under raking light. The SF 150-P lays down exactly that raking light — on a defined spot, sharp enough for close-up inspection.
As an inspection tool, the SF 150-P rounds out the full FLEX polishing system: you use it before polishing to assess the damage, during the process to track progress, and after every step to verify the result. A polishing routine without an inspection tool is guesswork — with the SF 150-P it becomes measurable quality control.
Detailing1's tip from the shop: Getting the most out of the FLEX SF 150-P Swirl Finder: darken the inspection area or work in shaded spots — daylight coming in from the side competes with the spot beam and washes out the swirls. Hold the spot at a shallow 30–45° angle to the paint and move it slowly across the area you're checking — swirls and holograms show up as bright circular or star-shaped patterns. After the finish step, check the surface with the SF 150-P from several angles: a good result is flawless from every angle, with no hologram hiding at one particular light angle.
Swirl marks are fine, circular scratches in the clear coat, caused by the wrong wash methods, poor polishing technique or bad polish. They show up clearly under direct sunlight or under a focused beam like the one from the FLEX SF 150-P Swirl Finder — but under normal indirect light they're barely there. That's why customers are happy with a polish under normal lighting, then see the swirls again on the next sunny day.
Holograms are a different kind of defect: they come from wrong polishing technique, too high an rpm, or the wrong pad-and-polish combo on a machine. Unlike swirls, holograms aren't circular — they show an even, streaky pattern that follows the path the pad took. Holograms stand out clearly under the SF 150-P's spot beam and have to be gone completely before the finish step — otherwise the end result won't look professional, no matter how much work went into the polish.
For experienced detailers, inspecting with the SF 150-P isn't the end of quality control — it's the start: what you find dictates the polishing plan. Deep swirls call for the cut step with PP-C; fine holograms from an earlier pass come out with PP-M or PP-F; a smeary film on the surface isn't a scratch at all but a cleaning issue that needs a different fix. Inspecting with the SF 150-P makes that difference visible — and heads off the most expensive mistake in detailing: the wrong plan for the wrong type of defect.
For anyone starting out in detailing, the SF 150-P is a teaching tool: it shows you what good technique achieves and what bad technique leaves behind. Check regularly with the SF 150-P and judge the result after each step, and you'll learn more about polishing quality in a handful of sessions than you would by trial and error with no way to see the feedback.
A professional polishing routine with the FLEX SF 150-P Swirl Finder built in looks like this: car comes in, rough clean, then a first inspection with the SF 150-P — a systematic survey of every paint defect, notes on the trouble spots, and the polishing plan locked in. That first inspection is the basis for the quote you give the customer and for planning the job in-house: how many steps are needed? Which areas need more work?
During polishing, the SF 150-P comes out after every step: after the cut step with PP-C you check whether every deep scratch is gone before you move to the compound step. After the compound step with PP-M you check whether every hologram from the cut step is gone. Only once the SF 150-P confirms there are no holograms left do you start the finish step with the PP-F.
The final quality check before handing the car back to the customer is the last job for the SF 150-P: a systematic inspection of every panel under the spot beam — no hologram, no swirl, no spot missed. Only when that final inspection comes back clean is the car ready to hand over. In this workflow the SF 150-P isn't optional — it's the last quality gate before delivery.
How well an inspection light performs comes down to more than brightness — the technical detail of the beam decides how reliably swirls show up. The FLEX SF 150-P runs a high colour temperature in the daylight-white range, close to natural sunlight. That matters: under warm-white light a lot of swirls are barely visible, because the reddish colour temperature masks the scattered-light reflections off the scratches. Daylight-white with a high CRI makes those reflections sharp and high-contrast.
The SF 150-P's focused spot creates a defined edge between the lit and unlit area. That sharp edge matters for swirl inspection: holograms and swirls are at their most visible right on the line between the bright spot and the dark surround. Run that edge zone systematically across the panel and you'll find every defect — even the ones that would be less obvious in the middle of the spot.
For long stretches of use in the shop, run time is a real factor. The SF 150-P is built for professional day-to-day use — solid build, enough output for a full walk-around of a car without fading. The handy size keeps fatigue down even through longer inspection sessions.
The SF 150-P isn't the only light you can spot swirls under — but it's the most effective one for day-to-day work. Line it up against the usual alternatives and you see why a dedicated inspection light is irreplaceable.
Daylight shows swirls well — but only under direct sun at the right angle. Direct sunlight is rarely on hand indoors, and outdoors it depends on the weather, the time of day and which way the car is facing. Base your verdict on polishing quality purely on the sun and you can't check systematically or repeatably.
Ordinary torches don't throw a tight enough raking light for swirl inspection. Too diffuse a source, the wrong part of the spectrum, no defined angle — the result is an unreliable picture that shows swirls sometimes and misses them other times, depending on how you happen to hold it. The SF 150-P takes that luck out of it: same type of light every time, same angle every time, repeatable results every time.
Full-spectrum work lights like the FLEX DWL 2500 full-spectrum light are superb ambient lighting for the whole space, but they're no substitute for a handheld inspection light. Full-spectrum overhead light shows swirls across the whole panel — the SF 150-P shows them in detail at the exact spot you're checking right now. The two tools complement each other: full-spectrum light for the overall picture, the SF 150-P for targeted close-up checks. Have both and you've got full quality control.
At 47.48 EUR the Swirl Finder is one of the cheapest buys in a professional detailing kit — and at the same time one of the most effective. No pricey pad, no elaborate machine upgrade improves polishing quality as directly as the tool that lets you see the quality in the first place.
For professional detailers the SF 150-P isn't an optional extra — it's must-have kit. Offer polishing services with no inspection light and you're inviting complaints from customers who spot the holograms in the sun — even though your own inspection came back clean. The SF 150-P is your insurance against that: holograms get caught in the shop, not by the customer in the car park.
As part of a complete FLEX polishing set, we recommend the SF 150-P alongside the PP-C, PP-M and PP-F pads as an essential part of the quality-assurance workflow. Combine those four tools and you've got a complete system for professional paint correction with quality control built in — from the first scratch to a spotless, verified final inspection.
