What are care products in car detailing? The step that comes after washing and cleaning. Washing lifts the loose dirt, cleaning breaks down the bonded film, and care then lays a protective layer over plastic and rubber. Skip this third step and every part sits exposed to sun and rain. Care products are the last of three steps in the car care routine. After the wash and after the actual cleaning, they seal the surface you've just laid bare. On paint that job goes to a sealant; on plastic and rubber it goes to the products in this category. They don't replace a cleaner and they aren't cosmetics — they buy you a lot more time before the next full detail.
Day-to-day from Detailing1: There's one order a lot of people get backwards: the dressing goes on before the car is properly dry. On leftover moisture the film lays down unevenly, because the water pushes the active ingredient aside. You only spot it as it flashes off — a cloudy haze that only comes right by wiping it off and starting again. After the wash, wait until the shuts and seal folds are dry too — in cool weather that takes a good half hour longer than the bodywork lets on. A blast of compressed air into the folds cuts that right down.
In everyday use the three steps of car care tend to blur into one. But they do different jobs and you can't swap one for another.
Washing removes loose dirt with water and shampoo. The share that simply rinses away is bigger than most people think — dust, pollen, dry road grime. What's left is the film that clings to the surface chemically.
Cleaning goes straight at that film. Here surfactants — and, depending on the product, solvents — get to work on grease, resin and baked-on dirt. After this step the surface is clean and bare at the same time: every last bit of protection from the previous treatment has come off with it.
Care fills that gap. It lays down a film of silicone oils or polymers, carrying UV absorbers. Those are molecules that soak up high-energy sunlight and give it off as heat before it can crack the polymer chains in the plastic. Day-to-day you only notice years later: a dressed dashboard is still black after eight years, an undressed one grey and blotchy.
You can't shortcut the order either. Combo products that promise to clean and dress in one pass are always a compromise: the cleaning side has to stay weak enough not to strip the fresh dressing straight back off, and the dressing side thin enough not to bind into the loosened dirt. For a mid-season touch-up on an already clean surface it works well. For the deep clean after winter it doesn't.
Skip the third step and you're working against yourself. The clean took the protective layer off with it, so the part is left more exposed than it was before the wash. That's why cleaning and care belong in the same session.
Not every part needs care equally urgently. Four spots almost always do, and all four get regularly overlooked.
Door seals are the classic case. They're made of soft rubber that draws its flex from plasticisers. Every cleaning pass pulls some of that out, and heat speeds it up on top. A hard seal freezes shut in winter, tears as you open the door and starts to leak — the water getting in then shows up as a musty smell in the cabin. The dashboard is the most UV-battered surface in the whole car, because it lies almost flat under the windscreen. The damage shows first above the passenger airbag, where the sun hits at its steepest.
On older cars a fifth spot joins in: the polycarbonate headlight lenses. From the factory they carry a thin UV-protective coating, and once that's broken down the material underneath yellows. Care can slow that process while the protective coat is still intact. Once the lens has gone milky, only a proper refurbish with a fresh coating will do — care products then buy you a few weeks of looks and nothing more.
The engine bay is the fourth case and the one treated least often. Plastic covers and cable insulation work non-stop at raised temperatures and go brittle because of it. The Koch-Chemie Motorplast “Mp” engine preservation is built for exactly these conditions.
The routine has three conditions, and all three decide the result.
The surface has to be clean. Dressing over a leftover film of dirt seals it in, and you end up with a greasy surface that grabs dust again faster than before. If you're not sure the clean was enough, run a finger across the surface — if it leaves a streak, there's still film there.
The surface has to be dry. Leftover moisture pushes the active ingredient aside and throws up clouds. The sneaky ones are the folds and shuts, where water keeps seeping out after you've applied and works its way under the fresh dressing.
Keep the dose light. Plastic only takes up so much; anything over that sits on top as a film and shines blotchy. Product onto the applicator, not onto the surface. Work it in even, overlapping passes, let it sit two to three minutes, then take the excess off with a dry microfibre cloth.
The last step is the one almost everyone skips — and it's exactly what decides between an even matte and a greasy shine. It costs two minutes per car.
You don't need much for tools. A foam applicator for smooth surfaces, a soft brush for vent slats and seams, two microfibre cloths. The one thing that matters is keeping the dressing applicator strictly apart from anything you use on glass: a trace of dressing in the glass cloth streaks the window straight away — streaks that only show up in backlight and then take several passes to shift.
Leave the steering wheel, gear lever and pedals out. A silicone film on the wheel rim makes it slippery, and that's not a cosmetic issue. These parts get cleaned and stay untreated. Same goes for the tread of the floor mats and the seatbelt webbing that runs through your hand.
Care products in this branch cover plastic and rubber. Paint runs on its own product world, and mixing the two up is a common reason for disappointing results.
Plastic dressing on paint leaves a greasy veil. It looks like deep gloss for a moment, but it pulls dust in, only comes off again with a degreaser, and on a sealed bonnet it wrecks the water repellency. What the paint wants is a paint sealant or a wax — both form a hard, water-repellent layer instead of a soft oily film.
The reverse holds too. Wax on plastic dries into white residue in the grain that you'll barely get back out. Anyone who's ever picked wax crumbs out of a black trim strip doesn't make that mistake twice — a strip of masking tape along the edge costs two minutes and saves half an hour.
The dividing line runs along the material boundary, not the part boundary. A black plastic strip in the middle of a painted door belongs in this category; a painted bumper belongs in Sealing & Polishing, even if the two sit right next to each other.
Glass stays a borderline case. Neither plastic dressing nor wax belongs there — glass has its own chemistry in a glass sealant, built around contact angle and beading. Overspray from plastic dressing on the windscreen is one of the most common causes of smearing wipers.

How often care is due comes down to where the car lives and to the part — not the calendar.
Interior surfaces last a long time, because they're shielded from rain. Twice a year covers most cars, and more brings no extra protection. If you mostly park in a garage or under a carport, once a year does it.
Exterior parts go by the number of washes. Every pass with an alkaline shampoo takes off part of the film, and with a pressure washer it goes faster. Reckon on six to ten washes, then a refresh is due. A simple test: if water sits in a sheet on the wheel-arch liner instead of running off in beads, the film is gone.
With a car that mostly stands still, the expectation flips. A car that barely moves ages faster inside than a high-miler, because it often sits in the sun and the interior climbs over 60 degrees. The heat drives the plasticisers out of the material. Here care matters more than cleaning, and a sunshade takes the brunt at no cost.
With a lease return it's worth an honest sum. Just before handback, care does something for the looks but no longer protects the substance in hindsight. If the car goes in two months, cleaning is enough. If you're keeping it, start today — care from as-new works far better than care from the point of damage.
The season sets the natural rhythm. The more important of the two dates is in spring: after winter, road-salt residue and moisture have to come out of seals and wheel arches, and the parts you've laid bare need protection before the sun season. The second date in autumn preps for salt and wet. If you only dress once, do it in spring — that's where the payoff per hour is biggest.
